We arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico late Tuesday afternoon, surprisingly to much cooler temperatures than back home in Illinois. Wednesday proved to be action packed! The group of 10 farmers and USB directors joined members of the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) from St. Louis and members of the American Soybean Association (ASA) from the Guadalajara office.
Our group's first stop was a store we are very familiar with -- WalMart. Despite the similarity in the store layout, the products were quite different; the biggest difference being the use of soy in many items such as AdeS, a soy beverage.
Our next stop was an oil refinery facility, which uses both soybean and palm oil. Our group toured the facility and was able to see soap being manufactured from soybean oil. We then headed to a soy lunch at a local school. Many schools incorporate soy into their meal programs because it is highly nutritious and relatively low cost. The last stop of the day was the Grupo Su Pollo poultry processing plant. Besides the processing plant, the group has more than 24 farms involving poultry.
